I just finished watching the 1938 film "The Adventures of Robin Hood" with Errol Flynn again for the first time in at least 2 decades.
A lot of times you watch an old film and thing "gods, did they make stinkers back then," but not so with this film. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I loved the costumes and sets, the vibrant colors, the beautiful woodland scenes. Awesome!
Certainly it doesn't have the realism of more modern films and, as a gamer, I recognize the occasional silly element such as fencing with what appeared to be broadswords, but it did not detract from my enjoyment of the film.
Errol Flynn's portrayal of Robin Hood was FUN! He made Robin Hood seem like someone I'd love to meet in real life; someone who I would, willingly, follow into Sherwood Forest.
This film was a very welcome relief from the years of dark and gritty films we've had in recent years. I hope more film makers start to understand what J. J. Abrams said about Star Trek. It's time we started seeing films with hope again; films with extraordinary heroes.
So it's thumbs up for Robin Hood!
