Having piqued my own interest I decided to do a little research. Or at least what counts as research in this day and age... (Google FTW! )

That particular image is from Cape Foulweather, Oregon. It is a lookout point along the Oregon cost and, I believe, south of Newport.

Turns out though, there are other plaques just like this one all over the place. No one knows who started the trend, or why, but my short little google session has shown me that they have them in Illinois, Ohio, New York, and several other locations.

Absolutely useless information, but kinda neat :D
