Fires burned in the distance, marked the planet’s major cities and was a sign of the largest betrayal of the Cardassian people. The sky rained soot onto a torn landscape, bringing little hope for the planet. The Dominion and its shock troops, the Jem’Hadar had turned against the peoples of Cardassia in a drive of genocide. The Cardassian people had been blind to join the Dominion in the greatest war the quadrants had ever seen, only to be betrayed by their Dominion allies when the Federation Alliance’s forces were only a stone’s throw away from Cardassia Prime.
Cardassia Prime’s major cities lay in ruins by the battle’s end, and nearly a billion of its citizens had been killed. The cost had been devastating, far too high for all the parties involved, but the Cardassians’ home-world had been shattered. Three years after it started, the Cardassian Union was a shadow of the formidable power it had once been.

Unknown to the crew of Starbase Haven or the brass at Starfleet Command, the Starbase is considered under the protection of the Cardassian Union.
