A man visited his neighborhood pet store, looking for a parrot. The store owner showed him one, saying that he knew how to talk but wouldn't talk all the time. The man said that sounded good, and took the parrot home.
A couple of days later, the man visited the pet store again. "The parrot hasn't said anything yet," he said. The store owner suggested getting the parrot a bell. The man agreed, and took the bell home to his parrot.
A couple more days later, the man is back in the pet store. "Still hasn't spoken," he told the store owner. The store owner told the man to get a mirror, to fool the parrot into thinking there was another bird there to talk to. So the man took home a mirror.
Another couple of days, and another visit to the pet store. "Still nothing," the man said. The store owner offered him a ladder for the bird, which the man bought.
And another visit a couple more days later. This time the solution to the silent parrot was a swing to entertain him.
Finally, a couple of days later, the man comes into the store, visibly mad. "Do you know what that parrot did?" he asked.
"No, what did he do?" asked the store owner.
"He rang the little bell, looked in the mirror, then climbed the ladder and swung on the swing a couple of times. Then he fell off, landed on his back, stuck his feet up in the air, looked over at me, and said, 'don't they sell any bird food at that pet store you keep going to?'"
